Ankylosing Spondylitis / Spondyloarthritis
THE term ‘spondyloarthritis’ encompasses a group of related conditions with common clinical
features and an increased frequency of HLA-B27. The shared clinical features include axial skeleton
involvement (sacroiliac joints and spine), peripheral joint involvement that is commonly asymmetrical, oligoarticular, large joint, as well as enthesitis, tenosynovitis and extraarticular features, including uveitis.
Etymologically, the term spondyloarthritis is an amalgamation of spondylo and peripheral arthritis (joint inflammation) to signify the association of peripheral and axial involvement in these conditions.
